Wichita Falls TX Today. This one really has me stumped. Doesn't match anything I can find in Sibley's. Using Whatbird search function it shows maybe MacGillivray's Warbler.

Thanks in advance

It's a Myiarchus flycatcher for sure. Pretty sure it's an immature Great-crested with that broad, white edge to the inner tertial feathers and extensive yellow below.

I think you might be right. Now I see the rufous on the wings. The very rounded head threw me off. I really didn't think it matched a warbler size or shape.

Yes, it should have been quite a bit larger than a warbler. These guys often lack their name-sake crest when they are younger.

Otherwise they should be called the Not-so-great Crested Flycatcher. :P

Aha, but they're not Great-crested Flycatchers, but Great Crested Flycatcher. 'Great' describes the bird's size, not the crest.

Either way, I reckon this counts as a Not-so-great Crested Flycatcher, since it's a widdle immature. ^_^

I'm not sure if I ever noticed that distinction in their name. Makes sense!

To go along with all the birds that are named "Common" that really are uncommon!
