i have been trying very hard this past week to set a new one day species total for myself. Despite the fall warbler and hawk migrations I failed. My all time record was set during a long mid to late summer trip to Bombay Hook NWR and Prime Hook NWR both in Delaware. With my mother's help we spotted 49 species that day (including a couple spotted only upon reviewing photographs from the day including an American Oystercatcher that somehow we missed noticing live). This past week I have hit 42 and 36 working local warbler and hawk heavy areas.

I know 49 species is a solid number but far from great or amazing. What is your one day total species record and was there anything special about it or any fun stories?

Benjamin

I don't have any huge numbers, but I did get 23 the other day, just in my backyard. I thought that wasn't too shabby for a yard count.

I hit 41 once on a bird club outing. If I am by myself I consider anything over 25 a great day. Best day for lifers was 27 on my first winter trip to south FL. ( 27 out of 31 birds)

I did the Word Series here in NJ and our team got 127 species within one county. That's probably my one day highest number of species.

56 is our record. Being on a birding club field trip helped. We were one short of our previous record of 52, so we actually started looking for a Starling, since we figured that'd be easy to come by while we were in town. Yes, we saw a few. Little did we know we were going to run into more species on our way home.

meghann, 23 is not bad at all for yard. We did our first Project Feeder Watch this last winter and our average species count was 12. We were just tickled when we got up to 15.

Life list (non ABA)- 204 Latest: Scarlet Tanager

Coolest: Audubon's Warbler
2013 Year list- 165
Yard list- 108 Latest: Scarlet Tanager

Coolest: Lesser Yellowlegs (This bird was terribly lost during our May snow, we are near no shore for this shorebird)

My highest count was 56 and it was in my yard. I know, pretty high for a yard, but during spring migration. . . it happens! :)

I know I got 97 one day at the Salton Sea, and don't think I have any other days with a higher count.

56 in your yard is pretty awesome! I believe my highest yard total was 32.

JimBob, Your footnote indicates only 37 species on your yard. You may need to update that!

I've not kept track of how many in one day. I'll have to give that a shot! I'm so stinking competitive though, I'll probably bird from 5am (Poorwills and Lesser Nighthawks) until after dark (owls.) B)

Wren,
I recently moved from Missouri to California. The old yard list was 98, and that is where I saw the 56 I was talking about.
