I want to know, though... what is the bird on the branch above and behind the flicker? (I can never get ONE bird to sit still long enough to get a picture, let alone two in the same shot)

Actually that red is at the base of the tail -- flicker's show the same color on the tail as they do in the wings. That bird in the back looks a bit like an Evening Grosbeak, but that's a rather wild guess.
Your right, that bird in the back does look and awful lot like an Evening Grosbeak. I would almost confirm that.
