Taken in Monterey CA (circa 1990), was hoping it may be possible to ID a pair of shorebirds (out of focus - sorry).

Given the rocky habitat, I don't know how I could rule out Wandering Tattler from this photo.

Fwiw, Tattler was my initial thought too, based on habitat.

Do you remember their behavior? Apparently Tattlers like to "bob" their bodies like Spotted Sandpipers.

Wandering Tattler was also my impression, based on bill length and shape (look a little long and thin for a Willet). Definitely far from positive from these shots, though.

Unfortunately, photo was from late 80's to 1990, before I was concentrating on birds (focus was on the sea lions/seals in the background). Can't recall much about the foreground activity. Thanks for the inputs - being an east coaster I'm not familiar with CA coastal birds.

What distinguishes Wandering Tattler (which would be a lifer), from Willet? (My Sibley's guide doesn't show much difference). Thanks.

the general look of how it hold its body is what caught my eye. Williets are little more chunky.
photo is not the best, and if you are unsure and since it be a lifer i would wait for a better look!

After looking again, I don't know how I ruled out wandering tattler. I agree that tattler is more likely...

Thanks for all the info & inputs - photo is (I believe) from Fall of 1989, before digital photography or my increased interest in birding. I wouldn't even be considering using this photo if I was going to get near the Pacific coast in the next few years (that will have to wait for retirement!)

I'd have no problems adding these to a list as Tattlers. GISS and bill look nothing like Willet to me. Add to that the habitat and I'm 99.9%.
