At first I thought this might be a lesser goldfinch, but the bill and head don't look right. I really have no idea at this point. Seen yesterday in San Jose, CA.

My feeling was that the upper back was too dark for an American Goldfinch.

Looks good for American Goldfinch to me.

Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow

To me, the bill looks pinkish, rather than black like the Lesser. The bill is also kind of long and thin, compared to the Lesser's short, thick bill. That's all I'm going on.
