I managed to snap a few [really terrible] photos of this bird that showed up today for the first time. My initial thought was Carolina or Black-capped, since that's what I'm used to seeing. After I got a better look at it, I started thinking Mountain Chickadee based on the color patterns. Since I'm in northeastern Maryland, I'm way out of the Mountain Chickadee's range as far as I know.

i don't know the range of the chestnut backed or the boreal chickadees but i think that it might be what you have?
Edit i looked up the range map of chestnut backed and it would be way out of your range but Boreal would be possible

not a chickadee - even better, you have a red-breasted nuthatch.

Oh, that's so exciting. And this is the first year I've had Red-breasted nuthatches in my area, and I love the call they have. The only other time I've ever heard those were on the ski lifts at Lake Tahoe during winter.

I'm in Harford County, too, and have been hearing tons of these this fall. I've only ever seen one here in the past, but they're around this year. They haven't found my feeder yet, though! I also love the sound they make. It reminds me of the Maine woods in summer!
