What's the deal with the whole naming thing for Gallinule/Moorhen? I wondered that when I saw one a month or so ago

Both the Old World and New World birds used to be under the same species, "Common Moorhen." Then the species were split and ours are "gallinule" and theirs remain "moorhen."

Any "Common Moorhen" you ever saw in America would be Gallinula galeata, now called Common Gallinule. The Common Moorhen, Gallinula chloropus, is Eurasian.
