I was hiking on the Appalachian Trail in SouthWest Virginia last September.  I woke up early in the evening to what sounded like a black howler monkey.  A minute or so later the call repeated and was quite close to me.  Then I heard a faint reply across the valley.  What sounded like a large bird took off from nearby in that direction.

Any idea what medium/large bird in Virginia makes that type of nocturnal call?

Sounds like a barred owl. They make some cool sounds, and some that sound like a couple of monkeys in a tree.

Just listened to the sound of a black howler monkey, and I don't think there is anything that sounds like that. You better run if you here that sound, sounds like a possible Bigfoot or Skunk Ape.

I agree it was probably a Barred Owl, although it doesn't sound much like a Howler Monkey. Wink
