Hmmm.... the shape and behavior look good for Northern Shrike, and I think I see a white spot on the wing, but I don't think I can say for sure.

I *think* there is a reddish cast to the breast and possibly head... would that help?

That would suggest Pine Grosbeak instead.

I zoomed in on Flickr. This looks like a House Finch (red wash on the head and upper breast, streaking on the flanks). If you lighten up the photo, it'll probably be much clearer.

Taken in SE Michigan. That brown streaking alone eliminates Purple and Pine.

Wow, you guys are amazing! Thanks for the help lightening the image, Matt. It's like a group of avian detectives her :)

We moved to BC from Michigan last summer. I am slowly but surely finding the bird photos I had taken in MI and having them identified. Plus I M learning the western birds :)

that's what i thought but beak looed a little smallish

It's got streaked flanks, so I don't see how it could be anything but House Finch.
