I am used to the brown House Finch females at the feeder but when I took a closer look yesterday, this one looked like an American Goldfinch.

Can they be back already in Oregon?

 It's a Pine Siskin..   I miss them - can't wait for them to show up again - I haven't seen any here for a couple of months

In both of your photos, it appears that you're using autofocus and shooting through a glass window.  You can eliminate the glare by using a circular polarizing filter.  You can get the birds in focus better by manually selecting an autofocus point in your camera setup. (In your first image, the front corner in of the bird feeder is in sharp focus, instead of the bird. In the 2nd image, the stick is in the sharpest focus.)

I am a beginner at birding as well as photography. Yes it's through the windows, it's winter, cold and wet outside, the feeders right there in front of the windows.

I'm not sure where the other thread is you mention.  But you can get a circular polarizing filter off of ebay for a few dollars...10-20 i would think, depending on your camera. Then, you turn the filter, and the glare disappears.  Read the camera manual...it should explain how to choose an autofocus point.  Then, you can put the autofocus point on the bird's eye.  Also, try to get the bird perpendicular to you.  That way, the entire bird will be in focus. :)

I am also in Oregon, and have tens of Pine Siskins at my feeder.  But I haven't seen any gold finches yet.  It seems to me that they are usually around at this time of year. All the info I find of them say that they are around all year, but that definitely isn't the case here in the Mt. Hood foothills.  Does anyone know?
