Rose-Breasted Grosbeak

Published 13 May 08 10:36 PM | Lesa

Today I spotted a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak at the feeder outside my office window.  He was so pretty!  He is mostly black on his back, mostly white on his belly, and has the most beautiful red chest. He enjoyed the feeder for several minutes, so I got to snap a few pictures of him.

Then after dinner we heard a bizarre squeaking sound. Jim looked out the window and saw that it was our grosbeak. He was visiting the feeders we have in the back. I am assuming it is the same one. Could be a different one, I guess.

Then I saw him this morning at the front feeder again. I am trying to get a better pic of him. Jim is impressed because he says he's never seen one in person.

We got our first Rose-breasted Grosbeak last week - what a thrill! And he even brought a girlfriend! My feeders are in Southern Illinois just east of St. Louis, MO.

Hi....

I have Red Breasted Groesbecks all summer.  I live in Michigan.  The male is beautiful as your picture shows.  The female however is the same body shape, same beak but a very drab brown and white.  They love black oilers....

Thanks for your comments, Carol and Denise. We just moved from the St. Louis area last year. Are you a Cardinals fan, Denise?
