bird of norcal

photos and sightings of northern california birds

First Post

My name is Kurt Geiger and I am pretty new to birding. I started taking a Field Bio class this year and I am hooked. I try to get out with my wife Shanna and my two kids, Carter 6 and Madison 5 as much as we can. We live in Chico California and we are lucky because there is a wealth of animal life and especially birds all over the North State. On any given day I can walk outside of my house and see Red Tails, Red Shoulders, Robins, Scrub JAys, Hummingbirds, Robins, Juncos, Warblers, Gulls, and Crows.

I was very excited yesterday to have my first confirmed Cooper's Hawk sighting. The photo did not come out as well as i had hoped but what a magnificent bird. As usual, my outing produced about a Dozen Red Tail sightings, several Red Shouldered Hawks, Northern Harriers, Great Egrets, Great Blue Heron, a Double Crested Cormorant, and a nesting pair of Osprey. We are limited by a small 150 dollar digi camera with no range but even the photos that are not that great are helpful as I learn how to ID birds. I look forward to sharing my expeditions, photos, and getting to know all of the birders that I can learn from!!!

Welcome to Whatbird.  I'm sure you will enjoy this site.  Lots of info and interesting posts from all over the country and some out of the country.  That is great that you get your family involved.   I can't get my family to much even look out the window when I spot something so this website is very nice to be able to share my findings.  I hope you enjoy this site as much as I do.  Happy birding!
