Noticed that the hummingbird feeder in front of the living room window was empty - again. Filled it and the other one, much to the happy sounds of hummers, who only took seconds to begin feeding. Finally saw a Goldfinch. I haven't seen many this year at all, despite having thistle seed out for them. And it's been a while since I noticed my Carolina Wren. Did have the usual cast of characters today - Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, House Finches, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, Cardinals, House Sparrows, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Grackles, and I think female (or juvenile) cowbirds. No chickadees or titmice, though. Of course, I'm not sitting at my window all day, and since I moved the other feeders to the side yard (to protect the birds from neighborhood cats hiding in my shrubs) I only have three feeders to watch. From last years' notes, the chickadees and titmice will probably return more towards the end of summer.
I did refill one of the hummingbird feeders on Friday, and right before I went to hang it up, a male hummingbird came up and started feeding as I was holding the feeder! I was wishing so hard that someone else could see me, but no one was around.
