Birds of my New Jersey back yard

things worth noting

  • Bird Updates...

Well, still seeing male RubyThroated Hummingbirds.  I can't believe how much nectar they are going through!!  Just this morning I filled both feeders, and it looks like I'll need to refill them tomorrow morning, or else risk running out.  It's kind of fun to watch them, sometimes around six or more, zipping 'round the yard.  One female comes up to the living room window often, and it looks like she's looking right in at me.  Twice I have been sitting in the yard, on my phone, and a female (same one?) has come up within two feet of me and looked at me.  My grandparents used to have a male (this was in Maine) who would actually tap on the window when he arrived back in the yard in the spring.  My grandmother would hurry and fill the feeders to satisfy the little guy.

AFter complaining about a lack of Goldfinches, I have seen quite a few recently.  It seems that they prefer the sunflowers I allow to grow around the fountain and in the garden to the thistle seed I have out for them.

Saw a chickadee yesterday, as well.  I get many more of them in the colder months than i do in the summer.  Tufted titmice, same thing.

  • Keeping track of my hummingbirds

Just wanted to make a note that I did see a male hummingbird today (I haven't watched all day as we've been out).  If I can, I'll make a note of it every day so I know when they leave, if that makes any sense at all.  I'm just trying to figure out when they leave to migrate, so maybe I can track them from year to year.  Today is August 10th, 2008.  We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Noticed that the hummingbird feeder in front of the living room window was empty - again.  Filled it and the other one, much to the happy sounds of hummers, who only took seconds to begin feeding.  Finally saw a Goldfinch.  I haven't seen many this year at all, despite having thistle seed out for them.  And it's been a while since I noticed my Carolina Wren.  Did have the usual cast of characters today - Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, House Finches, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, Cardinals, House Sparrows, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Grackles, and I think female (or juvenile) cowbirds.  No chickadees or titmice, though.  Of course, I'm not sitting at my window all day, and since I moved the other feeders to the side yard (to protect the birds from neighborhood cats hiding in my shrubs) I only have three feeders to watch.  From last years' notes, the chickadees and titmice will probably return more towards the end of summer.

I did refill one of the hummingbird feeders on Friday, and right before I went to hang it up, a male hummingbird came up and started feeding as I was holding the feeder!  I was wishing so hard that someone else could see me, but no one was around.
