Winter visitors

Well, another chilly day in Batavia, OH - we have ice on top of snow on the ground but it seems to be melting a little today.  I went outside to feed the birds this morning.  I saw deer tracks near the feeders, squirrel tracks on top of the snow and little, tiny chipmunck tracks under the feeder too.  Looks like everyone is hungry!  I put out plenty of food this morning and everyone came to eat.  Here's my list for today:

Carolina Chickadee, White Breasted Nuthatch, Tufted Titmouse, Song Sparrow, Mourning Dove, Cardinals, Northern Mockingbird, European Starlings, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, Dark Eyed Junco, American Goldfinch, Blue Jay, Turkey Vulture (up above).   And - four pesky squirrels - but they seem to want to share today!

I sure can't wait for the snow to melt and the weather to warm up a bit so I can venture outside into the woods.  I miss my migratory visitors.

More birds to report.....

A pair of House Finches came by and a Red Shouldered Hawk landed in a tree over the creek.  The Blue Jay was swooping him to get him to fly away - and he finally did.

I think my Mockingbird is the gatekeeper.  He seems to stay around all day and he tries to chase the squirrels away.  It's fun to watch him.  He flies right up to my deck and perches on the backs of the rought iron chairs and peeks in at me.  I wonder if he is watching me today like I am watching the birds....Food for thought!

It sounds like you have the same conditions as we have here in Connecticut snow on the ground with ice forming on top. The birds and other animals are fluffed up attempting to keep warm and on on the hunt for food I have have put out alot more than what is required to make sure there is enough for our wee friends out there. The weather has been crazy here we get some really nice warm days then the next thing we are in the middle of nasty winter storm.I am beginning to understand what Mark Twain meant by don't like the weather in New England just wait 5 minutes and it will change.

I, like you, can't wait for the weather to change. I want to get going walk about in the state parks and ponds.
