Just received Handheld Birds for my Palm today. I will play with it tomorrow. I will try to report back at some point.

Thanks for all the great info in your blog.

Mitch,

Just happened upon this site while doing a search for black-hooded parakeets. What a wonderful resource you are providing! I am so impressed, and I really appreciate your review of the NatGeo Handheld Birds. Every time I see it advertised for sale somewhere, I wonder whether I should take the chance. I'm a computer nerd so it doesn't intimidate me. But it is pretty expensive, especially as an addition to a library already overflowing with books and birdsong CDs. Your review, which I could so relate to, has convinced me to go ahead. Thank you.

Thank you so much Elaine for the nice comments. I often wonder how many people actually read the review and if it helps them make a buying decision. It sounds to me like you are sold on the product and I am grateful to hear this.

Mitch,

I wish he had found your review before my husband bought this product as a gift for me. We definitely would not have spent the money, and cannot recommend it to anyone who does not have a lot of expertise and time and patience.

I had real problems installing the software and getting the whole thing to work even half-way.  After many searches and unanswered calls and emails asking for help, I did get to talk with an IT person.

I have finally been able to get the PDA to sync with my husband's PC, but cannot get it to sync with my laptop. This is very inconvenient.

Perhaps our biggest disapppointment was their return policy which we did not find until we had opened the package.  They will not accept returns of products which have been opened.

Hi Mitch,

I got the Handheld Birds for my 11 year old boy.  He's quite a bit on the gifted side and showed an interest in birding at a very young age.  We have so many birds where we live and we've loved trying to figure out what they were, or which one was singing that particular song we heard through the trees.

I'm no computer nerd, but found it a long process in getting it all going...but truly, it wasn't difficult.  Patience is essential...lol.

What we would really love to see...is an additional version to encompass birds from other continents.  That would be GREAT!!!

Any future plans for that?
