Ballona Marsh report for May 5, 2007
I was so excited for today, it's Kentucky Derby day! that I woke up at 5:11 a.m., forced myself to go back to sleep then got up a little after 6:00 a.m. Had a cup of coffee, read my emails, then headed out to the Ballona Marsh.
Not a bad morning at the marsh, but no lifers. There didn't seem to be as many birds out this morning. A slow morning.
Todays list...
Great-tail Grackle, Mallards, Red-wing Blackbird, American Coot, Mourning Dove, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Pied-billed Grebe, Gadwalls, Wilson's Warbler, Barn Swallow, same two mystery Sparrows from the other day (still didn't get a good look at them), White-throated Swifts, Black Phoebe, European Starling, Killdeer, House Finch, Allen's Hummingbird, Canada Goose, Black-necked Stilt, Cinnamon Teals, Willet (maybe, this bird was a bit out of range, so can't be sure), Western Kingbird, Ruddy Duck, Warbling Vireo, Black-Crowned Night Herons, Great Egret (overhead), Red-tail Hawk.
I saw something I've yet to ID, and may never ID. It was even further away then the possible Willet. It was sitting on a fence with it's back to me. It had the shape and size of a small heron, but I can't be sure. I did get a photo, but it's such a far away shot it's doubtfull I'll ever figure out what it was.
