    Strange, odd or flat wrong

    Attachment: cowbird.jpg

Edit:  I filled in the remaining blanks.

This may not work but I will give it a try.  State what is strange, odd or wrong about each of the following pictures.

Edit: Some of this is too deep.  I have rethought this and will place correct answers as they appear next to the picture number.  You can respond more than once or only on one picture.

Picture #1     Species: Jim Penny male Brown-headed Cowbird          Oddity: Jim Penny paired with a female bronzed cowbird

Latest Birds: Black-throated Green Warbler, Pine Warbler, Eastern Kingbird, Rufous-backed Robin, Crissal Thrasher

Picture #4     Species: Lyceel great-tailed grackle nest   Oddity: Mourning Dove eggs

I have also seen Mourning Doves use a curve-billed thrasher and a northern mockingbird nest.

Picture #5     Species: Mourning Dove     Oddity: There are three eggs

Mourning doves lay two eggs, although a third by the same female is very remote, the third egg more than likely came from another mourning dove.  One of the eggs was pushed aside the next day.

Re: Strange, odd or flat wrong

You're right--not quite sure what you are after.  So here goes some guesses.

Picture #1 looks to be a pair of  Brown-headed Cowbirds

Picture #2 has a mourning dove in the background but in the foreground looks to be a female Band-tailed Pigeon.

Picture #3 looks to be a female cowbird probably trying to lay eggs in a barn swallow nest.

Not sure of the next two pictures of eggs in nests unless those are cowbird eggs.

Picture# 5 is of a Western Tanager.  Looks normal.

Re: Strange, odd or flat wrong

The nature of your comments are exactly what I was looking for.  You got one species right and one oddity correct.  Thanks for participating.  After this is done we can determine if my quiz is a bit lame.

Re: Strange, odd or flat wrong

I don't know about the rest of the pics but #6 looks like he/she's sitting on some sort of mound on the grass - makeshift nest?

Are perhaps the eggs in #5 chicken eggs?  I'm not good with egg ID's - just taking a guess as they look like chicken eggs to me.

Re: Strange, odd or flat wrong

There's a morning dove along with the cowbirds in photo 1.

There are 2 female house sparrows with the doves in photo 2.

What may be a cowbird egg along with a grackle egg in photo 4.

Re: Strange, odd or flat wrong

Well, I still thought this was a pair of brown-headed cowbirds.  But since you say no, then it must be the Bronzed Cowbird but there is no red eye.

Re: Strange, odd or flat wrong

I thought that you were trying trick us with a picture of a mourning dove with another species of dove.  But since the pale one was  not a female band-tailed, it must just be an extra pale mourning dove.  Never seen one that pale before.

Re: Strange, odd or flat wrong

Is the oddity on the Western Tanager i that its head is not red enough for this time of year.
