Re: Northern Mocker, sunroof shot
I never get tired of seeing the mockers in my yard. Beautiful birds and great singers.

Gorgeous shot! They may be common and everyday to some of you but I just recently got a halfway decent shot of one last weekend, as I rarely see them (of course it may be my fault I don't see them, not the birds' fault)

Great shot, Lyceel! (I hope you weren't driving and "shooting" thru the sunroof! )

Re: Northern Mocker, sunroof shot
Thanks. The main thing that made it so clear was how close I could get. The bird was at least a third of the photo frame and that was after I backed off my zoom to help with the sharpness. The magic of sunroof photography! @Curlybird: I doubt you'd miss a mockingbird if they were around. They love to perform! They're beautiful singers, but sometimes they're persistent enough for you to wish they'd shut up! My guess is they just don't like the desert, so not a lot of them get to southern California. They're pretty much ubiquitous here (I had a mother hatch two in my tiny oak tree this year).

Actually, the one I finally got a decent photo of was at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, which is right at the ocean in Huntington Beach, CA. I definitely heard him before I saw him. I was only able to get one good shot though, as he flew off after that (hate when that happens!

Re: Northern Mocker, sunroof shot
That's an awesome shot. I'm surrounded by those buggers around here and have never gotten quite that close to one. Great job.

Re: Northern Mocker, sunroof shot
Someone spotted one about an hour from here last week. I wish they were more common - very nice picture.

Re: Northern Mocker, sunroof shot
throughout much of the southeast, mockingbirds are one of the most common species that nests in neighborhoods. i can't think of one breeding season that i did not have a pair nesting in the ligustrums on the side of my house.
mockers are some of the most territorial birds i've ever seen, with very aggressive defense of their area no matter the intruding species (cats, humans, dogs, hawks, hummers, grackles, cardinals, other mockingbirds, ect.........). they are very interesting to listen to. i've heard them mimic everything from squirrels, cardinals, chimney swifts, car horns, cars' engines turning over to start, and the best - the "HELLOO" from that song that the icecream truck plays. neat birds that are taken for granted alot, so thanks for sharing such a great pic of one.

Re: Northern Mocker, sunroof shot
I had never seen one before - so it is a mocker? If it is the local birdwatchers called it ratty looking!
