So jealous. We have Blue Jays out east. I suppose I'm just used to them, that's why Stellars are more exciting.

Don't be envious, spongebird.  I've been on both coasts, and Steller's jays are so noisy and obnoxious that you can't hear any other birds over them.  They sound like witches arguing and screaming curses from the tops of trees.  I find blue jays endearing, but Steller's jays make me nuts.  In northern Arizona, they even have a white eyebrow that makes them looks angry!

Here in California, when the Steller's go nuts in the trees, it is a sure sign of a predator. I usually run out and get to see a Sharp-shinned Hawk, a Cooper's, a Red-shouldered Hawk, or one time even a red Bobcat. But they really are obnoxious. I once saw a Steller's killing a Spotted Towhee by pecking it in the head. I really don't like those birds except for their ability to announce excitement.
