    Cedar Waxwings in So CA

I am in Irvine, CA (So CA) and would really really like to add a Cedar Waxwing to my life list (including a photo).  Can anyone tell me what type of habitats they are usually found?  Or if any of you are in So CA, do you know any good hotspots to find them?

Hello Curlybird...I'm no expert on Cedar Waxwings but in my experience they are very nomadic and unpredictable...appearing when you least expect it.  I live in AR and the few times I've seen them was mainly in the winter months.  also, the love berries

you might want to check for a local Audubon SOciety in your area or other birdwatcher's club for more information about their activities in your area

Okay, thanks.  I looked at the range map for my area, and it looks like they are most common here during winter months.  I'm going to do some further research of my area to see where I might find one - they are SO beautiful.  Their feathers just look like silk to me.

They are quite beautiful.  I managed to spot a flock down here last March.  The first thing that struck me about them is that they don't sound much like birds.  Their call is more like an insect.  Quick and very high-pitched.  You probably won't realize you're hearing it at first.  It helps that they rarely travel alone!

Thanks - I was told by my local Audubon Society that they are found in a wildlife sanctuary I visit all the time, sometime in late fall/early winter so I'm keeping an eye/ear out for them!

I have a book with bird songs on it so I keep listening to Cedar Waxwings so I will know the wound when I hear it.

Our winter flocks are just starting to come down from the foothills into the valley floor of Central California since the weather has cooled. Once you hear them a couple of times you can memorize their "seee-zee" calls from the tree tops. They like berries and gnats. Click on the tag below to take a listen.

The ones I see and hear near my home like to hang out in the tip tops of Liquidambar, Hawthorn, Cedar, Pepper, Cypress, and Pecan trees. I hear them mid afternoon in small flocks going to a nearby orchard then again 4-6 I see them return in mixed flocks with starlings and blackbirds.
