    Houston, TX Birding

I'll be in Houston the rest of the week and I was thinking about visiting the Arboretum and Nature Center.  Is the birding good there this time of year?  Any other suggestions?  I'll be staying in the vicinity of the George R Brown Convention Center and won't have a lot of spare time but really want to get in some birding. Thanks.

I don't know for sure, but it's Fall migration time, so I'd think birding would be great around there this time of year.

It has been years since I was a volunteer there but the Arboretum and Nature Center on Woodway (I believe) should be a good place.  It is a safe place with ample trails through wooded trails and along the bayou.  I don't remember much else.

Another good place of mixed habitat and one that is safe is Armand Bayou Preserve over off of Bay Area Blvd. near Pasadena/Clear Lake area.

If you make it down to Galveston or Boliver area, I;m sure there are plenty of shorebirds.  Also, there is the Gray Wetlands Center in Baytown which should have some shorebirds.  Plenty of water habitat along with some mixed woods along it's Eastern edges.

    Ally,

I'm remembering some more of the Arboretum.  I believe they even had an area of plantings designed to bring in hummingbirds, as well as, having a resident owl on the property.  Give them a call and discuss what is available in habitat, as well as, likely observable birds.  I know that they had a gift shop/headquarters that had a lot of bird and animal identification material.
