    Re: show me snow

oh good you have the crested jays. I only see one or two of them occasionaly. We have the scrub jays or pinyon jays mostly here and had a pair nest this year in the oak brush near the house. There are a couple juvenilles eating outside today. They eat a couple bites and fill their mouths and carry the rest off and then back again in a few minutes.

The snow here was only on the mountain passes just north of here but we got the cold breezes and a little frost last night.

I must be computer illiterate cause i always have problem trying to post photos on here

sandylee, your Redpoll pic is beautiful.   I'm hoping I can add that bird to my list before this winter is over..   What a pretty bird...

Thank you very much!  For the last two years the "Polls" have come down from Canada to spend the winter with us.  They are PIGGIES...but WAY cute!  You should have no problem seeing them in your area....They like thistle seed the best, but also eat the BOSS.

Hi sandylee.. I actually stopped by a wild bird store the other day and picked up some seed for the Redpolls..  It's mostly thistle seed with a mix of some other small seed. And I do have lots of BOSS out for the other birds.. so it sounds like I'm set.  :) I overheard the store owner say they should be arriving here in about 3 weeks..  I'll be watching.  :)

    Re: show me snow

boss is black oil sunflower seeds. anymore through some people refer to mixes with black sunflower boss.

There has been questions about black oil seeds causing some plants growing close to the feeders to die off but i have not seen any problem here. But we get lots of hot dry weather and the drought kills more than anything else.

    Re: show me snow

i left off that in recent years horse people have been buying boss because it gives a sheen to horses and they love it too. The prices of seed has went up some because the demand for the sunbflowers has went up

    Re: show me snow

Ranchway feeds has their headquarters at Fort Collins Colorado.. All the farm and ranch stores the farm coops and  the Cenex stores. carry their cattle and horse feeds and now the Little Wings bird seed mixes. I quit buying the straight boss cause their rocky mountain blend has lots of black sunflowers and cracked corn and lots of little seeds that gives me more of a variety for the different birds i get. the finches and juncos and towhees like the little stuff and the bigger birds like the sunflowers and corn. And there is no milo in the mix which is in lots of mixes and my birds waste a lot of the milo.

Not an advertisement but just what i have went to in recent years

My next door neighbor, who also happens to be my daughter took this pic out of her dining room window. There are some perks when living on a lake....

Great Blue Heron after a late spring snow earlier this year....

    Re: show me snow

Please check out the video in my signature.  My daughter made it on a dark, cold snowy day last winter when we'd been snowed in, here near Seattle.  Worst winter in years, actually and I had a little female hummer stay the entire winter.  At the time, I was struggling with some personal things and keeping that feeder thawed out for her was a god-sent diversion.  She'd click at me first thing in the morning and would hang out all day. She finally flew away in early spring.....

Thanks Matt! I devour bird books, bird surf on the net and subscribe to two magazines - and I've learned a ton in the short time I've been here. Plan to keep learning from you all!
