    Re: Red bird, black cap?

I just saw one of these birds the other day and couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was.  It had a vulture looking head which threw me.  Glad I found this thread.  I can now rest at night knowing what it is.

    Re: Red bird, black cap?

My wife has told me about this bird and I thought she was crazy. Glad to see that she is OK. I have yet to see it but she says that is red with a full black head and yellow/orange beak and about the size of a cardinal. She first saw it about a week ago and my daughter saw it today. I live in northern middle Tennessee along the Kentucky border. I'm glad that I found this site because I was about to have her committed. Thanks!!!!

    Re: Red bird, black cap?

I had to join this forum after reading about the "mystery" bird. I too have seen one of these at my feeder. I also thought I was seeing a cardinal at first. I was totally mystified! Good to have the correct answer. I'm hoping it's not my same cardinal who is usually around. I have a male and female juvie around, but have not seen the parents in a while. What causes this parasite problem? Is it curable?

I was glad to find the answer to why the cardinal visiting my window feeder at the University of Illinois at Springfield looked so strange. Also glad to know his feathers will grow back and he'll again look like our state bird.

I have attached a picture (I hope!) of this poor little thing in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Cornell's Project Feederwatch has a whole page featuring bald Cardinals and Blue Jays with more photos and information:

    Hope this helps.

This string of info has been great! We live in central Virginia, about 50 miles from the mountains and first noticed an odd "black headed" red bird about a month ago. We are daily deck sitters and knew we had never seen anything like it! Checked my Birds of Virginia software, which I think is often quite helpful & didn't see a thing. Stumped, I searched & found this website. Very helpful!! We have so many cardinals, and hope that this problem doesn't spread.

    Re: Red bird, black cap?

I had a local birding friend who sent me a picture of cardinal with the same problem.
The birds in my backyard haven't had this problem so much but have seen a few having problems with their feet and legs.

    Re: Red bird, black cap?

Cardinals with bare heads are incredibly common. If you have a feeder in a place where there are cardinals, you will see, eventually, a cardinal with no head feathers.

Does Anyone Know about Birds with Eye Problems

I am in Marietta GA and yesterday or the day before a very sad bird came to our feeder.  My husband called me to come see as he was about to fill up the feeder and the bird did not fly away.  I came and looked and the bird was sitting there eating away and did not fly away with us only about a foot from it.  It became obvious to me that it was blind.  I looked at it and it had growths all over its eyes.  Also its feathers seemed as though they were oily, but then it had been raining so it may have been just wet. I was going to try and catch it to see if I could help it because I knew it could not survive for long like that.  However when I went to reach out it sensed the movement and flew away. Does anyone know anything about any eye conditions happening to birds?. I was not sure what kind it was but it was not a finch as I am aware of the finch eye problem.  It looked like it could have been some sort of growth or infection, as the eye was oozing and the seeds from the feeder would stick to his eye.  He may have been a young bird but not sure what kind. He was a grey streaked, streamline, longer than wide bird.  I felt very sad for this bird.  I hope it was just this one bird and not a prevailing problem.

I shot video of that bird perched and singing (Long Island NY). If anyone wants a look let me know - ill email you the file. Except for the crazy head he seemed quite healthy.

    Re: Red bird, black cap?

I have also seen this mysterious red bird with a black head, but up close and less than 5 feet away.  The pictures that everyone else has posted show no feathers on the head.  The one I had in my front flower bed where I put my seed DEFINITELY had black head feathers.  I was sitting on my front porch and other birds flew up to eat and then there he/she was with a red body and head full of black feathers.  I tried to get my camera (just inside my door) but the moment I moved, it flew away.  I'll try snap the picture so I can zoom in on my computer to verify I wasn't just imagining feathers being there.  It did seem to be attracted to the sunflower seed similar to the cardinals are.  I will get some more sunflower seeds to see if I can keep it coming back.

    Re: Red bird, black cap?

Has this always happened or is it a relatively new disease.
