Re: Weekly (more or less) Photo Quiz!

Sorry guys, should have let you know, but was on a cruise in the Caribbean all of last week! So here's the answer for last weeks quiz and will post another one right now and will start back up the normal routine, just email me your answers before I post the new quiz on Sunday (March 2).
This one maybe seemed a bit to easy for you guys, almost everybody who responded got it right, I don't know if that means I need to find some harder ones or maybe you guys are just too good now... Big Smile.
Let's get to the answer now, overall this bird feels small, has a thin and pointed bill, yellow belly and throat, and a gray necklace that wraps up to the face. The bill looks bicolored, pinkish on the lower mandible and darker up top. Overall I'd say it's pretty safe to call this bird a warbler-ish bird. Perhaps the most notable feature is the tail, note the solid black tip with a large white spot towards the middle of the tail. Not many birds have that feature, in fact, I can only think of one, Magnolia Warbler!
Hmmm, maybe that was a bit too easy! Stick out tongue

I photographed this first year Magnolia Warbler in Georgia during September. almost

Re: Weekly (more or less) Photo Quiz!

Wow, this was WAY too easy for you guys, everybody who responded got it correct (I guess that's a good thing...).
Since it seemed so simple, I guess I don't need to go into much detail for the answer. I thought as a nice surprise, I would quote one of our very own "WhatBirders" for this answer:
    Nancy said:
"I think this week's quiz has to be a male Evening Grosbeak.   It has the yellow body, brown head, yellow supercilium and probably forehead, and a white wing patch on what looks like a black wing.  It all seems to fit."
I think that pretty much sums it up! Great job Nancy for a complete answer, and my congrats to the rest of the respondents!

Oh and a quick side note, I want to congratulate tim.birdboy for correctly answering every single quiz so far!

Re: Weekly (more or less) Photo Quiz!

Alright here we go, looks like we had several people give more complete answers this time, I love it, it makes it a little easier when it comes time for me to write the answer.

Here's a quote from BillK to get us started:                                                                                                                           "Looks like a small chunky bird with a very short tail which basically leaves Wrens and Nuthatches.
All of our Wrens have brown with barring on the upper tail. So that leaves Nuthatches."

What a great start! That short tail seems to give it away as a nuthatch, very few birds have tails that short! Now, knowing that the photo was taken in Montana, we have 3 nuthatch species, White-breasted, Red-breasted, and Pygmy. Let's start with White-breasted, we can note that the undertail coverts are pretty clean, most White-breasteds have some sort of chestnut coloration on the undertail coverts, even the really worn birds should have some trace of chestnut, which is lacking in this bird. Now lets look at Pygmy and Red-breasted. If this was a Red-breasted, I would expect to see some sort of orange on its belly. We can see some buffy areas, but note that the extent of gray on the flanks extends on out of sight. That seems to pretty safely rule out Red-breasted Nuthatch, leaving us with Pygmy Nuthatch.

    Tallies of incorrect answers:
    Red-breasted Nuthatch - 2

Oh just to take a little bit off your shoulders, the white bird is not any type of swan....

Re: Weekly (more or less) Photo Quiz!

Wow, this quiz was definitely tougher than any of the previous quizzes, maybe a bit too tough, nobody got it totally right. It seems that the past ones were slightly too easy and this one was too hard, I'm trying to find an in between point...Wink

This quiz had 2 birds in it, one large white bird, and one slightly smaller brown-gray one, both birds in the water. The secret to this quiz is to look at the birds in the context of each other. For instance if one bird is a Bald Eagle, then obviously the second bird is not a Song Sparrow since the size difference isn't that dramatic.

Let's start with the solid white one since there aren't too many birds like that. Just at a glance it may appear to be a gull, but other than Ivory Gull, there is not a single species of North American gull that is solid white (with no contrast between the wings and body). We can rule out Ivory by the presence of a fairly thick (long-ish) neck. Great Egret also comes to mind, but I have never seen a member of the Egret/Heron family go all the way into the water and stick it's head TOTALLY under water with only the base of the neck visible. Plus, the base of the neck seems quite thick for a egret. Snow Goose also comes to mind, but there is no black visible on the primaries (not always visible, but it is usually visible) and the neck looks a bit longer than that of a Snow Goose. What about American White Pelican, everything seems to line up right, the overall jizz (general impression of size and shape) seems to fit also. But we have to remember, context is of key importance in this quiz. If the bird is a Great Egret, then the other bird looks like possibly a Little Blue Heron, but note that in a Great Egret and Little Blue Heron, the size difference would be a bit more dramatic than what we see in this quiz. If it is a Snow Goose, then I really can't think of what the other bird would be, other then a Blue Snow or Ross's, but the Ross's would be smaller in comparison then in the quiz, and a Blue Snow should be the same size, but we can see that it is slightly smaller.

Well then, by process of elimination, we can say that the white bird is an American White Pelican, but what would the other bird be? Canada Goose may come to mind, the size difference seems to fit pretty well, but there is now white rump contrasting with a black tail. Also a juvenile species of gull seems to fit well with the plumage, but wait a minute, American White Pelicans are gigantic compared to any species of north American gull, even Great Black-backed are tiny compared to American White Pelican. The bird has a dark nape, which seems to fit very nicely with Brown Pelican. Compare the two sizes and everything fits just perfectly!

I know this quiz was very tough, and I'm going to try to make the next one easier, but not too easy as I've had some complaints about that... Wink

This American White Pelican  and Brown Pelican was photographed near Aransas, Texas, in March 2005.

    Tallies of incorrect guesses:
    Heermann's Gull - 1
    Glaucous Gull - 1
    Great Egret - 3
    Gadwall - 1
    Snow Goose - 1
    Little Blue Heron - 2

Though nobody got the quiz totally correct, I would like to congratulate BillK for getting one of the two species correct! My hats off to you, this was really tough!

Re: Weekly (more or less) Photo Quiz!

Wow, it seems like this is an all time low for our quiz respondent numbers, hopefully it will pick up more on this next quiz.

Alright this quiz has a small, yellow bird, but the key marking we want to notice here is the tail spots. As soon as you see that, red lights should be going off...Warbler!
It seems to have a  predominantly yellow belly fading into olive-green head (and perhaps a trace of olive-green streaks on the flanks). That brings to mind Yellow, Blue-winged, Pine and Orange-crowned.
Let's start with Orange-crowned, the plumage color doesn't seem to bad, but remember, tail spots! Orange-crowned is one of the few warblers that does not have tail spots, so that can safely be ruled out.
Next, Pine Warbler, seems to fit quite nicely actually, all the plumage characteristics line up, but lets move on before we draw any conclusions.
Blue-winged Warbler, they have a bright yellow belly like we see here, but I don't see any trace of a dark black line through the eye, nor any yellow in the crown area (which would be present even in females).
Yellow Warbler, once again I will refer to the tail, Yellow Warblers do have tail spots, however, they are yellow rather than white like we see in this bird.

All that being said it seems to fit perfectly with Pine Warbler, even the faint olive streaks on the flanks, and also olive auricular and crown makes this a perfect match!

I photographed this Pine Warbler at my house (actually right outside the window that I am looking out right now Stick out tongue) here in Georgia.

    Tallies of incorrect guesses:
    Yellow Warbler - 1
    Blue-winged Warbler - 1
