There is no way it can be a Pine Warbler without white undertail coverts.

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

I still think the best bet here is female Scarlet Tanager.

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

Hey... whatever it is, Pine, Yellow (Palm?) Warbler or Tanager..... I've got none of those on my checklist yet.  So it will be a new bird either way.

Too many different opinions to positively check one or the other off.

The link to the Summer Tanager did, to an extent, describe the 'jump foraging'.....but I think the female is too dull.

Until I see it again, I can't check anything off.  I will say that some descriptions I've rea of the Scarlet Tanager do not fit.  For example, Allaboutbirds.com says it is a bird of the forest interior...... I saw mine in the woods, but in an opening. And the woods are set in the middle of a very residential area....a K-6 schoola dn middle school are directly across the street.  Thats not to say that birds don't stray from the norm from time to time.

Also, that page says they are often overlooked despite the makes bright coloring, due to their secretive behavior and preference for the forest canopy.  (and the photo of the female looks too dull....my bird was decently bright).  The bird I saw was on the ground then in a 5' tall bush...and the flailing up and down is not what I would consider to be secretive.  But like I said, I can't determine one way or the other.

In the Scarlet's defense, the page also said that in the heart of its range in the northeast (my backyard), Scarlets can be found in 'small forest patches'...and else where, the same sort of forest patch will be absent of any Tanagers.  And I was in a small (er...about 4 acres) woodsy area.  Who knows..... obviously not me!  =)

I appreciate the feedback....  Lets take a vote.  Post only what you think it is then I will tally it up and hope I see ti again to verify.

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

Just a general tip here: you can easily reach false conclusions based on looking at a single photo in a reference book. One photo cannot capture the wide variety of appearances many species can show - not every individual looks exactly the same, especially when you consider different lighting conditions thrown into the mix. Also, you similarly can't reach conclusions based on where you might see a bird during its migration (such as this bird).  For example,  tired and hungry migrating birds that ordinarily do not visit backyard feeders will often uncharacteristically do so during migration.  Also, individual birds may show up occasionally outside of what reference books show to be their normal range (we had a white wagtail in Florida last year). Always keep these caveats in mind.

Could you post the rest of the pictures?

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

    Surely......gotta find them all......

I didn't see this, at all, in my pictures....but yesterday I saw two Blue-Winged Warblers in the exact same spot as the bird in question.  I didn't see the black eye band on the photos of this bird, but the bright bright yellow and dark wings back match.

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

I have new developments in the case of the yellow (colored...) Warbler.

I saw two Blue-Winged Warblers in the SAME row of thorn bushes that I saw the other yellow colored warbler.  Perhaps this could have been what I saw??  My inclination is that it wasn't a BWW.....I know the photos were hurt, but I didn't see the obvious black band across the eye.

The first photo is the bird in question (unfortunately thats the best shot I have), the others are the Blue-Winged Warbler.

It is a blue-winged warbler.  Nice bird.

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

It (meaning the original bird) cannot be a Blue-winged Warbler for the same reason why it cannot by a Pine Warbler - the undertail coverts are yellow in your photos - both warblers would be white.

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

It still is very hard to tell. It's between female Yellow Warbler and female Scarlet Tanager. The last picture makes me think it's more a Scarlet Tanager rather than a Yellow Warbler. This is due to the notched tail (at least it looks like it has a notched tail) and the chunkier looking bill, which would be thinner on the warbler.

    Re: Yellow Warbler???

Ok first I was going to say I thought it was a female scarlet tanager, then when I looked at the beak it is black or very dark and then I saw a pic of a pine warbler and I thought ok I am just not sure, the pine warbler does have a darker colored beak so not sure myself.....

Here are some different (just as poor) shots of Bird #1 that show the back and under side of the wing.
