Cactus wrens build secondary nests.  I have seen these built into palm fronds and a wrought iron fence.  The reading says its for impressing the mate or fooling predators.  The one thing in common is that they are very proud of their accomplishment by singing above it for a couple of days.

This cardinal was well inside the focal range of my 400mm lens, but he had:

    A Don King hairdo.

    A Dizzy Gillespie goatee.

    And a big yap!

Cool shot, Matt.  When I was down in Joshua Tree Nat'l Park in April (first time I went through North entrance and then a few weeks later went through South (Cottonwood springs) entrance), I was hoping to see a Cactus Wren but never did.  I'm going back there around November (after the HEAT is over) so maybe I'll see one then.
