...And, a couple of Barn Swallows (juveniles, though, so I guess they technically aren't a "pair")

Great idea for a thread, Kiwi. Good chance to see the differences in birds that we don't always recognize because of their gender. I can't help but wonder if there'd be even more interest in this thread if you had of called it "Bird Sex", or if that title would have just disappointed everyone once they discovered the real theme of the thread. Big Smile

Here's a pair of Northern Cardinals, female on the left, male on the right.

    Re: A Pair

ospreys - this is a local pair that i have encontered many times over the last 4 years.  on one occasion, in the dead of winter, i saw the most amazing osprey dive from one of these birds in a cypress swamp.  the bird was ~ 20' above the tree canopy (so approx 60' above the water) and over an open part of the swamp.  when it spotted a fish it hovered like a kestrel for ~10 sec and then went into an absolute vertical stoop.  the sound of the bird hitting the water was impressive.  it too the osprey 2 attempts, but it finally got a carp.  neat stuff.  here they are during a time of year when food is much easier to find.

Red-masked Parakeets from San Francisco.  Frustrated that my only opportunity was into the sunrise but really a thrill.  If you are from the bay area can you let me know if local residents see them on a regular basis?
