Re: Post your interesting combo photos....
The Black-chinned is a resident and will be leaving any day now. The Rufous is a migrant. At one time last we had 16 hummers at our feeders. Anna's year around, Black-chinned seasonal, and Rufous migrants.
Latest Birds: Black-throated Green Warbler, Pine Warbler, Eastern Kingbird, Rufous-backed Robin, Crissal Thrasher

I love this thread! Great Egret, Black-crowned Night Heron and Ring Billed Gull. (There was a great blue nearby but he wouldn't come to the family party for the picture!!!!!)

lyceel:Definitely an odd couple (they're odd when they're not coupled!)
Nice shot! What is that bird on the right, and is it something found on the West Coast?

That's an Anhinga. Unfortunately, they pretty much stick to the Southeast. If you ever come to Florida though, you won't have a problem finding them. They're everywhere around here.

They must be HUGE, judging by how small that green heron looks next to it!

I never thought of them as that large, but you're right. Sibley's says they're 35" with a 45" wingspan, which makes them one of the larger birds around here. They're outclassed by the Great Egret and Great Blue Heron, but they're bigger than most of the other Herons. They're about on par with the DC Cormorant, which is their closest local relative.

lyceel:Curlybird beat me to the Heron combo! Oh, well, here's the Heron Trio: Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, and Snowy Egret
You snooze, you lose!
Yours is more closeup, though. I couldn't get any closer because of them being so far apart. I kept telling them to move in closer but they wouldn't listen!

Don't you hate that? I tried to get a little closer to these three while I told them, "It's OK, don't fly off." Did they listen? Of course not. On the subject. Why is it that the biggest water birds are the most skittish? I've never seen two birds more nervous than the Great Blue Heron and the Great Egret (unless you've got a fish with you, of course).
