Camera shake is a problem that many have, using an IS or VR isn't the end all of end all but what it does do is allows you to shoot at what the camera perceives to be a faster shutter speed example lets say the shutter speed is 1/100 with VR or IS it would fool the camera to think it is approx 1/400.

There are many techniques to combat camera shake such as how you stand hold your camera your arm positions etc. Perhaps if you where to read up on some of these methods you will find the camera shake although not eliminated totally but to a place where it is acceptable if you do a google search on camera shake I think you will find a great deal of sites that will teach you how to combat it. Then I believe you will again get enjoyment with your D90

It's not a D90, it's a P90.  If I photograph birds from the car driver's side window, I use the window ledge to steady my hands.  Birds from the apartment balcony, I try to lean on the outside wall. 

Trees, fences, all good to stabilize a wobbly photographer.  Then there's holding your breath and/or not having caffeine for three days before you take photos.   Yep, I know all the tricks.  I'm thinking pretty soon some camera company will come out with one of those things for photographers that Hannibal Lechter was wheeled around in. 

I have suggested all I can think of.

I will say this for me DSLR is the camera of my choice and that of a good number of others for me it is because of the flexibility of a DSLR.

For others they prefer point and shoot for what ever there reason it would seem that for you it is the point and shoot would seem to be better for you to control your camera shake.

When you started this thread you posed the question of DSLR vs Advanced P&S the short answer is simple you pay for what you get. And that is the DSLR will out perform a point and shoot that is the reason why DSLR cameras are more expensive and are the camera of choice by the professionals for years. To compare it is abit like comparing apples to oranges. The point and shot cameras are getting better all the time but they will never be able to do what a DSLR can do
