    Re: FIGHT!

You may be right, I think it was a civil health care debate.  Big Smile

Hummers are known for their aggressiveness and being very territorial (very will documented).  My description of the encounter says in fact they were communicating, the black-chinned said get out of here!  They were not playing tag as the Anna's came back to feed a few minutes later.

"Fight" is probably a little tough, but certainly these two were behaving like 1 year old kids disagreeing over the ownership of a toy.

This feeder wasn't big enough for these two male american goldfinches!

Your picture is better than mine but the end result is the same!  What can these guys possibly fight over!  I'll keep feeding them all winter if they stay - I want to see them change in the spring.

New for 2010: horned lark, prairie falcon, red-necked grebe, bewick's wren, snow bunting

    Re: FIGHT!

I didn't get a picture of this (didn't have my camera with me, but I did have the binos), but I just witnessed a Northern Mockingbird territorial dispute out in the parking lot at work!  I'd never seen one before.  Kinda reminded me of a primitive dance, a game of chess, and a couple of wrestlers staring each other down all at the same time.  Very cool to see!

This was great to watch!  Taken today - a grebe (Western or Clark's) has a fish, and this gull kept trying over and over to take it from him.  I don't know if the grebe stole it first from the gull but that gull was really getting nasty!!!!

Osprey vs. Crow - not fighting yet but the crows kept diving down trying to attack him - this is at my apt. complex in the middle of a city!  I tried to get photos of the attack but had to go to work.

I find it funny that the Crows don't like him/'her around - do they consider the Osprey a threat to them or their food?  Since Ospreys eat fish, I don't see why they would mind.

    Re: FIGHT!

I think it's just their reaction to any raptor (they probably don't care about their normal diet).  I sometimes feel bad for raptors that get mobbed, especially when they're minding their own business like your Osprey.

On the other hand, it's funny to watch the Blue Jays around here going nuts over a Red-Shouldered, and the Red-Shouldered completely ignoring them because he's got prey in his sights.

    Re: FIGHT!

Yeah, this Osprey has been showing up at the lake in middle of my apt complex for a few weeks now; I've seen some big fish in the lake (they look like Koi) so I know why he keeps coming back!  Just seems like a funny place for an Osprey, in the middle of a city.

    Re: FIGHT!

I got a shot of a hummingbird biting the toe of another hummingbird who just wanted a little sip of nectar, but haven't figured out how to get it in this reply.  Look for it on the recently posted list.
