    Hello and rare bird question

I am new to this site, though a long-time backyard birder. I live in the northern foothills of Tucson, Arizona, in desert environment, and with a very small bird pond, some feeders, and plantings. I get lots of birds visiting, but mostly expected birds. Yesterday morning I saw an unusual-looking woodpecker or flicker on my quail block. Careful observation and a check in my bird book and here told me it was a golden-fronted woodpecker. According to the references, these occur in Oklahoma and Texas, with strays to eastern New Mexico. We recently had a huge major cold front come through. My question is: could the woodpecker have been picked up by the winds and deposited here, hundreds of miles from its normal territory?

Did you get any pictures? If you did, you should send it to the Arizona Field Ornithologists (or another local bird club). Are you sure it isn't a Gila?

I'm a million percent sure it isn't a Gila. They are very similar, of course, but the one I saw had a golden nape of neck and yellow around its bill. Its red "cardinal cap" was much bigger than a Gila's and irregularly shaped. It also looked... odd. Somewhat different facial features. That's what made me get out the binocs and really scrutinize it.

I didn't get a picture--by the time I could have brought my camera out it was gone, and I haven't seen it today. But speaking of pictures--how do you get the picture next to your message? I uploaded a bird pic as an "avatar," but don't know how to get it to appear.

I don't know how to get pictures on the message, and when you do the "avatar" you upload the picture, and then click a button near the bottom of the window that says "save". Even if you don't get a picture, you should still report it.

Re: Hello and rare bird question

Thanks. I did report it to the Audubon rare bird hotline. The only other really unusual bird I've had is an albino (actually leucistic) hummingbird, probably a black-chin female, a few years ago. I reported it to Audubon and two hours later a photographer from Phoenix showed up on my doorstep.
