This is gonna be a tough one (for me anyway)  I can't find anything that fits exactly.  Any clues?

Sorry, no clues on this one!

    Answer

Sorry all for the delay.  I was on a fabulous weekend birding trip (Mountain Plovers!), and didn't get back until late last night.

We can easily tell this is a wood-warbler species by its small, compact appearence and complex markings involving yellow.  The yellow face, contrasting eyeline, white wingbars and flank streaks tell us that this is one of the closely related "black-throated" warblers (Black-throated Gray Townsend's, Hermit, Black-throated Green, and Golden-cheeked Warbler).  The throat itself isn't actually solid black, meaning that its either a young or female bird.  Unfortunately, featherbrain didn't give us the location where the photo was taken, so we'll have to go through every species methodically.

Black-throated Gray is easily ruled out by the prescence of yellow on the face.  The only bit of yellow on a Black-throated Gray is a tiny spot on the lore, between the eye and the bill.

Townsend's not only has yellow on the face, but on the breast, belly, and flanks.  The quiz bird only has yellow on its face, ruling out Townsend's.

Hermit simply shows no eyeline at any age, and they have no flank streaks, eliminating it.

Black-throated Green shows a much less contrasting eyeline and crown, and though we don't have a very good view of the mantle, it would be a solid olive green color, whereas this quiz bird's mantle is a slatey gray, with faint patterning.

That makes our last remaining contestant Golden-cheeked Warbler.  The contrasting eyeline and crown, plus lack of any yellow on the breast, belly, or flanks makes this a female Golden-cheeked for sure.

featherbrain photographed this female Golden-cheeked Warbler (Dendroica chrysoparia) at Balcones NWR, near Austin, Texas.

    Incorrect guesses

    Black-throated Green Warbler - 2

    Worm-eating Warbler - 1

Congratulations to these users who guessed correctly!

    Re: Answer

Ok guys, like tim said this quiz is a bit different, I know this is supposed to be a photo quiz, but this week it's going to be a video!

Sorry for the horrible video quality, photobucket downsized it, it was pretty clear before photobucket. I also apologize for the for the very shakey videographer, he should have been using a tripod (next time I see him I'll have to give him a lecture on stabilization...Stick out tongue).

Since it is somewhat necesary for this quiz, I will give you the location, I took this video in northwestern Georgia, and it is a regular bird for this area.

Also, just a little bonus for this quiz, if you can ID the 2 species of calling birds we'll give you a bit more recognition. For the "chips" I myself am not 100% sure, but I will accept 2 species for that answer, the singing bird is IDable though.

    Enjoy!

    Re: Answer

I think we all agreed that this weeks bird was a thrush of the genus Catharus (Bicknell's, Gray-cheeked, Swainson's, and Hermit Thrush, and Veery). The olive-brown upperparts with pale gray underparts and spotting on the breast, Catharus thrushes are easy to identify as a group, however, to identify a Catharus to the species is a bit more tricky.
Veery has reddish upper parts with a less distinct face pattern, both of these characteristics are lacking in this bird. There is also a lack of reddish in the breast, and the spots are noticeably dark.
Hermit Thrush can also ruled out for some of the same reasons, we know the bird was photographed in the Eastern US, and Hermit Thrushes in the East are very red, especially in the primaries and tail. Also, the spots on the breast are usually darker and bolder then the bird in the video.
That leaves us with Gray-cheeked and Swainson's, often a very tricky pair to separate. Swainson's usually has a very buffy face, while Gray-cheeked tends to have a (as the name suggests) a grayer face. Looking at the bird's face we don't see the large and often conspicuous buffy spectacles of the Swainson's Thrush, plus the malar stripe is not near as distinct as a Swainson's would be.

I videoed this Gray-cheeked Thrush in my yard in Ringgold, GA during the wonderful month of May.

    Tallies of incorrect guesses:
    Hermit Thrush - 2
    Veery - 1

Also congratulations to those who correctly answered the singing and calling birds, the two acceptable answers for the calling bird (since I wasn't sure myself) was Northern Cardinal and Indigo Bunting.

Great job Ephilly, you were the only one to completely answer this weeks quiz!

Thanks valleygirl, the work is worth it just as long as we still have people responding! I will try to get more video quizzes, though they are a bit tricky to actually get a good video of a bird without fancy equipment.

Ok guys, here's the next quiz! Taken in Maine:

    Re: Answer

If I understand your quiz 16 answer, the calling bird could have been a cardinal or bunting.  What was the singing bird?

btw I appreciate your quizzes. I'm learning a lot.
