    Picassa v. Flickr

Which do you prefer?  Or other suggestions?

What I want is a free site that will allow me to organize my photos.  I do not want to save any images to my hard drive.  Is it possible to save the images to an external drive?

Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

     Thanks!

I don't know anything about the two you name.  I use Shutterfly and couldn't be happier.  They store all my pictures for free like you say.  I can also order prints at a very reasonable price which of course is what they want you to do.  I also made Christmas cards last year and an awesome calendar all of which they want you to do.  I can edit my pictures and share them with friends.  All in all I couldn't be happier with Shutterfly.

You can save your images to an external Harddrive you can write them cd or dvd you can store them online.I don't know much about the free storage sites as I have my own web site that costs me a small amount from memory I think it is about $150 for 2 years.

My Advice to you is if you want to store your images on line it would be a wise thing to back them up on either and external drive cd or dvd roms.

I agree with thekiwi when he says that it would be a good idea to back them up locally instead of just relying on an Internet site.

You can store them on an external drive just like you would on your hard drive.  You should be able to get a good 250 GB+ hard drive for under $100 from just about any computer store.

I have no experience with Flickr, but have to say that I love Picasa.  Part of the motivation to use Picasa, though, is the actual photo software, not just the Picasa Web Albums.  If you're anything like me (just want to do a few edits to photos like crop, brighten, sharpen, etc) and aren't too picky about using layers or masks or any of that, Picasa is a great free program.  You can also set it to automatically sync your local files (and by local, I mean non-Internet-stored, as you can configure Picasa to only look for photos on an external drive as well) to your Web Albums, so that whatever you put on your drive is automatically uploaded to the Internet.  This comes in handy when editing -- if you edit a file that's already on the Internet, Picasa will upload the changes the next time you connect.

Like I said, I know very little about the other services, but use Picasa and Picasa Web Albums to a great extent, so feel free to ask any follow up questions you might have.

Thanks for the replies!  I always back up my photos on CDs/DVDs.

Obnates:  With Picassa, do I have to store any of my photos on my hard drive?  What I'm trying to avoid is clogging up my hard drive with my photos.

What about security settings on these sites?  Can you use different settings for different albums?  For example, I don't mind my wildlife photos to be publicly accessible, but I do not my family photos to be.

    Re: Picassa v. Flickr

You could just store them all online, yes, assuming you don't have massive amounts of photos.  There's a file limit to the free Picasa Web Albums (although you could pay to up the amount).  That's the major drawback to Picasa.  (Although there's nothing stopping you from opening up multiple Google accounts.)

You can control the privacy of individual albums, yes.  For example, you could make your wildlife album a Public album but leave everything else as a Private album.  I believe there's also an "unlisted" option, so it won't show up if people search for it, but if someone is already at your albums, it will show up as a gallery.

You can also map your photos (or, if your camera geo-tags, so much the better), so you could keep track of which photos you took where and that will show up on a little Google Map within the album.

You might consider signing up for multiple photo sites and just playing around with a handful of photos on each and see which you prefer.  I know people love Flickr and some of the other sites, while I personally like Picasa, so it really comes down to individual preference.

    EDIT:

There are 3 options for albums, like I said earlier:  public, private, and unlisted.  Here are the official definitions of each, straight from Google:

Public: Anyone can view your public albums on your public gallery.

Unlisted: Only those who have the secret link can see your album.

Sign-in required to view: Only those you specify by name can view your photos.

    Thanks Obnates!

I started to open accounts, but didn't want to start taking the time to upload all my files until I asked a few questions.

    Re: Picassa v. Flickr

I use Flickr to post photos as well as a few other places.  The free account in Flickr is limited to 200 images.  If you pay $25/year you can upload all you want.  When you upload you can specify privacy settings (only you, just contacts, just family/friends, public,) I don't like the Flickr interface all that well, especially the white background, but for the cost of a magazine subscription I don't expect too much.

I don't think I'd rely on a web based storage solution. I use a 500GB external drive and backup everything to DVD as well.  I always burn 2 copies of the DVD and if I was really paranoid I'd bring one of the copies into work or some other location in case of fire/flood etc..
