the simplest way to bring out the eyes, (artists do this with portraits) use the burn tool, set at about 45%, , and add highlights on top of the small highlights that are there on the eyeball itself....and burn in the white area of the eyeball itself, more at the bottom of the eyeball, and less as it recedes under the top eyelid.. experiment with amount of burn, until you are happy with it... this leaves the rest of the photo alone...normally i would sample the black of the pupil, and paint in one circle over top the existing pupil, and burn in the highlights or reflections afterward...play with it, and you will see how effective this is. good luck.. nice photo ...

That is one way to do it but it isn't the simplest way.

If you was to send a portrait off to a retoucher they would charge you big bucks and this is the way they do it

    1. Load image into Photoshop

    2. Add a curves adjument layer

    3. Push the curves to brighten the image (over brighten)

    4. Invert the resulting mask from the adjustment

    5. Paint the eyes with white then you can back off the effect using the opacity slider.

Here are some images showin what I mean just change the ending    /adjustment-1.jpg to /adjustment-2.jpg and so on up to adjustment-5.jpg

the way i did it changes only the eyes...that was the original aim... look at the differences in the edited photo you did, and what i did...mine is 100% original---except the eyes...changing the curve changes everything...i don't think that was the intention...

birdseye the way I did it only changes the eyes that is all, I guess you have no idea about what the mask does in photoshop with it you can target areas you want to change I have been using Photoshop for number of years know. I would like it if you don't know how photoshop works not to tell me that I am doing something I am not doing. Read my step by step again and if you have photoshop try it for yourself.

Re: What can I do to bring out eyes?

Kiwi, please don't think I'm picking on you, but your image is slightly different than the original -- if you open up different browser tabs and alternate between the original, your edit, and birdseye's edit, you can see that birdseye's is identical to the original other than the eyes, while yours is different.  Your edit makes the hair a little warmer red and the face a little brighter as well.  Not a bad effect, actually, I think your edit looks pretty good, but I think birdseye's point was correct.

Re: What can I do to bring out eyes?

Birdseyes point was not correct it was wrong just as yours is the original photograph is not altered just the eyes unless you wish to spend money and take courses on using photoshop and unless you know how to use photoshop then please do not tell me that the image is changed other than the alteration I targeted. It is idiot statements such as yours and birdseyes which have stopped from from doing tutorials and I guess I am going to stop showing you all how things are done in photoshop as I am getting really tried of you folks telling me that I did this I did that when you all show me here in your words 100% that you have know idea how photoshop works let me ask you this do you even own or use a copy of Photoshop?

Birdseye thinking he is so cleaver and then made that silly statement about how I did it, left out a very important step in his version, he is writting directly onto the original file, That is something I never do and neither will any teacher who teaches photoshop.

Kiwi, there's no need to get nasty and call people idiots.  I know very well how to use Photoshop even though I don't personally own it, as I have a friend who uses it on a daily basis.  That's not even the point here anyway.  The point is, whether you want to admit it or not, your photo IS slightly different other than the eyes.

Here's an animated pic that shows birdseye's image, the original image, and your image in sequence.  Yours is slightly different.

Re: What can I do to bring out eyes?

Kiwi...relax man...I didn't think this was a question on tutorials of Photoshop.. just " how do i bring out the eyes"...Lots of folks don't own photoshop (I do, I use it everyday at work, have for the past 10 years- I am a graphic artist by trade for the last 25 years...)...

Then why did you use elements to make the alteration?

This one I did in Photshop using nothing but layermasks and sharpening and yes I sharpened the entire image then targeted the eyes

Re: What can I do to bring out eyes?

I use elements for the easy, fast fixes...No need to layer this.. I alter the original, when i am satisfied with the results I save it  as a jpeg. then I either step back to the original, or exit the program..it asks if i want to save the changes, i say no... if i need to..  I have 25 backward steps if i need them...Everyone uses different methods, kinda just what you are use to i guess.

Re: What can I do to bring out eyes?

As an otherwise disinterested third party, I see a noticeable difference in Kiwi's version and no difference in Birdseye's (except for the eyes).

Yikes, I like the Orangutan's dark, mysterious and sad looking deep set eyes after all.

Thank you for everyone's input... backing away slowly
