    Hummingbird in NJ

I have 3 beautiful hummingbirds, which I feed regularly. Something magical happened today. I was watering the plants outside with my garden hose set to shower, while one of the birds was feeding nearby.  He purposely flew into the shower stream repeatedly, taking a bath.  This went on for about 3 minutes.

What a treat. Was wondering if  this is normal behavior? Has this happened to anyone else?

What a neat story and better yet a neat memory.  Hummingbirds have no fear of Humans... We present no threat to them... at least no threat unless we have sinister objectives.  A bird that flaps his wings at 40-50 flaps a second has the ability to move out of the way... at any time it perceives a threat.  We are just too slow to be a threat to them.

What a treat! hummingbirds love moving water. They are attracted to sprinklers, fountains and people spraying water.

    Made my whole week!!!

I have had 3 little friends all summer. The aerial acrobatics are a joy to watch.  Does anyone know when they leave NJ for the winter?

The exit is variable but here is what my Williamson book says... Most depart northern edge of range by late August.  Females lag males, juveniles lag females.  There are many records of Rufous on the east coast and some instances of birds spending the winter.  No harm in keeping your feeder out, just make sure that is gets refreshed.  Once activity declines keep just enough in the feeder so that you don't feel bad about replacing it when it needs to be cleaned.  Get some pictures.....

    Northern range is Canada.

Up here in northern Michigan, I had two hummers yesterday! (9/14)  One (little fatty!) spent the day on the butterfly bush, the other visited the feeder several times in the afternoon.  Have not seen them today tho.

The little fat guy was so intent on eating, he hardly minded me pointing a camera at him!

When you post a letter in a thread there are tabs above the subject line...  Compose   Options   Related   Preview

Go to the options tab and ht the Add/Update to post a picture from your hard drive (<600k)

The other approach is to insert a web link using the tree icon (two left of the smiley face on the toolbar).

My hummers LOVE the rain!  Good thing too because we sure got a lot of it!  I find when we have a shower my hummers multiply!  I read somewhere once where a woman said she was watering her plants and the hummers were diving through the shower taking a little bath!  I think my hummers have left for their journey as I have not seen or heard them for a few days.  I will keep the feeders up for a little bit yet though just in case!  I live in Jackson NJ and i love my hummer population!  They are a joy to watch and friends/family are amazed by them!

My 3 hummers are still here and I'm north of you in Morristown! Sorry, but the picture is not too good. Will work on it!
