This one is a common loon.

Looks like a juvy Common Loon to me. Loons can be difficult in basic plumages.

Re: San Francisco Bay bird confirmations and questions

    Ahhhh, thanks.

I started this thread because I had zero experience with the birds of the SF Bay and ocean, or land birds of the marshes and shores.  Trying to idenitfy them from my observations and pictures and then getting help from this forum has been invaluable.  In a few weeks, I've managed to photograph and identify a decent number of what seem to be the regular birds, though there are far more I haven't seen.

This forum has helped identify or confirm the following:  (1)  Black-Necked Stilt; (2) American White Pelican; (3) Black Skimmer; (4) Great Egret; (5) Snowy Egret; (6) Least Sandpiper; (7) Sora; (8) Greater Yellowlegs; (9) Lesser Yellowlegs; (10) Long-Billed Curlew; (11) Killdeer; (12) Marsh Wren (13) Savannah Sparrow; (14) American Coot; (15) Black-Bellied Plover; (16) American Avocet (17) Whimbrel; (18) Willet; (19) Northern Shoveler; (20) Ruddy Duck; (21) Double-Crested Cormorant; (22) Western Sandpiper; (23) Short-Billed Dowicher; (24) Brown Pelican; (25) Black Oystercatcher; (26) Black Turnstone; (27) Surf Scoter; and (28) Surfbird.  And now Common Loon.

Thanks for the help (and the patience).

Marbled Godwit, I believe.  This is Pillar Point, on the ocean.

I'd feel pretty safe calling this one Marbled. The bill is a little shorter than I like to see, but I think the bird might be pointing slightly away from the camera.

    Here's another shot.

With the Marbled Godwit, I think I've seen most of the truly common shorebirds in the area.

I want to say red-throated loon, but I would think that the darkness on the face and neck are off.

Re: San Francisco Bay bird confirmations and questions

It could be a Pacific Loon. The gray head and neck is consistent with a Pacific, while the spotting on the back is more consistent with Red-throated. On the other hand, I'm detecting no upturn on the bill, which is ultimately landing me on Pacific.

With those leads, I think this bird is a juvenile Red-Throated Loon.  There's a great picture in the Smithsonian field guide.

Here's another shot of the same bird.

Re: San Francisco Bay bird confirmations and questions

Here are a few more pictures, mostly because they turned out pretty well.  I think I have them all properly ID'd, but please let me know if I get some wrong.  I think these are birds that are already in this thread.

    American Avocet.
