    Re: Hand Feeder

both of these are brave feeders... empty the feeder,.. except a very little bit...if you see them feeding, just wait til they go up to their perch, away from the feeder..go right up to the feeder and stand still... facing the feeder.. don't look up to see where they are, just stand there.. .do this a couple of times, and  when you see them again, go right out again, put some in your hand, and wait... hold your hand up by the  feeder, prop your arm there.. and wait. it may  take a few times, but in a short time, they will feed out of your hands.. the key is to have your hand the sole source of food at that time...takes very little patience, but some. good luck.. after they learn, they will come up to you  any place you are standing.. good luck

    Re: Hand Feeder

It never occurred to me to try this!  You've just given me my new winter funtime project. I'm going to wait until the snow flies and less people are tending thier feeders (unfortunately - but this is how it is in my neighborhood). Less choices for them might mean more hungry birds for me. :-)  The Chickadees already come within inches of me when I'm filling or cleaning up under the feeder.

    Great question! Fabulous answer!

take care of the smell on your hands for one thing. you can get a spray can that 'takes care of' human smells. hunters use them. this will make you less intimidating. let us know what happens.

    Re: Hand Feeder

i have a ladder i stand on to fill several feeders. I use a tupperware bowl and plastic cup to fill the feeders. I was standing on the ladder with the bowl in one hand and the cup in the other and a nuthatch landed in the bowl snd ate while i was standing there. Since then it has done that several times again.

    Re: Hand Feeder

the same nuthatch is a daily feeder and now is eating out of the plastic cup as i hold it. But also there is a black and white chicadee joining hin now. They must roost nearby because almost every time i go out and fill the feeders they.quickly show up. they land on a tree branch close to my head and watch for a little bit and then either land in the cup or tupperware bowl.

Good Going!  Now,  the next step is to get a photo while holding the camera in the other hand, or set it on a tripod right by you!... let us see the shots!
