...and he brought some friends.

 

I'm not sure what kind of little guy this is, but my husband and I were delighted to see 10-12 of them sitting in the tree five feet from our back door. 

We've developed a budding interest in identifying birds, but have no idea how to start, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

We'd like to find out who this little guy and his friends are. 

 

Its a cedar waxwing.

im hoping i get a flock this year when my mulberries grow. i hear they love them.

That's a Bohemian Waxwing, not a Cedar Waxwing, you can tell by the overall gray color.  Cedar Waxwings are a lot yellower and also don't show the warm reddish-brown on the forehead and mustache areas. Where are you located?

Bohemian Waxwing, look at the belly.  Wish we had Cedar's in Alaska, but did see Bohemians in Fairbanks.  They are beautiful birds IMO.

Lol...ok so it's of the waxwing family :)

We're in Nova Scotia, Halifax area.

It was wonderful...there was a small flock of them that decided that they liked to hang out in our red maple branches. :)

I think they are absolutely gorgeous, and so confident! We walked up to them (ok, we "sidled") to the distance of about 3 feet, and they all calmly watched us.

It was quite the experience. 

Bohemian for sure, a good mark (especially for quick ID in flight) is the brown undertail coverts.
