    What is this little guy?

    Attachment: Eastern Pheobe.JPG

He's making quite a mess, as you can see, fixing this existing nest above my daughters window.  Is this the Eastern Pheobe?  I will have to make two posts to get both pics in here.

    Thanks,

    Jen

Looks like it could be an Eastern Phoebe.  What part of the country do you live in?

Re: What is this little guy?

Certainly appears to be an Eastern Phoebe, which is not inconsistent with your location.

Most definitely an Eastern Phoebe. That's really cool that they're making a nest right near your window!

First thing I thought was Eastern Phoebe also.

I wish I was able to see one... but unfortunately I haven't.

Yep, phoebe.   I love their song.

Eastern phoebe. Lucky you to have a nest of one on your house

I am exicted that they have made a nest on my house, too. I can see them flying around out my bedroom window which is on the same side of the house as the nest.  They are very cute and I like their song.  My daughter is 5 and she can identify Tufted Titmouse, Northern Cardinal, Dark-eyed Junco, Mourning Dove, Black-Capped Chickadee, White Throated Sparrow and the House Finch, so far.  We also learn about their songs.  She is also excited to learn about a new bird that she can hear singing from the nest above her window and see out my window.  Aren't birds & kids amazing!

Wow, that is awesome!  I haven't spotted an Eastern Phoebe yet, let alone have the pleasure of watching her nest!  (Just a Northern Mockingbird, who likes to steal my dog's dry dog food.)  Jeperren, my 4 yr old girl also is my little birder, & knows most of our common birds' names.  But when she gets excited, she sometimes calls a woodpecker a "birdpecker."  Birds & kids are amazing! Re: What is this little guy?

By the way, it is the female that builds the nest, & they are usually built under the eaves of a house, under a bridge, or in culverts.  They can have 2 broods a year, with 4-5 eggs each.  Just by looks, there is no way I've read to tell the male & female apart, but sometimes the male is a little bit darker.  I also read that they are big victims of the brown-headed cowbird. The female brown-headed cowbird will usually remove the phoebe's eggs & replace them with hers, & the phoebe rarely rejects them.  If a phoebe egg actually hatches, it does it a few days later than the cowbirds, & ends up starving.  Sad

I hope you end up with phoebe babies not cowbirds; you'll have to let us know how it turns out!

Wow, nice pictures!!!   I just saw my first black phoebe this week on a trip to San Diego.  Since I'm from Michigan, this was very exciting.

These are my first phoebe's. About how long from when the eggs are laid to when they hatch?  I hope I end up with phoebe babies too!  I will let you all know!
