    Re: Hummingbird Help

Very good.  The only other thing I can go on is the Texas handbooks which seem to indicate that I'm more likely to see a Black chinned than a ruby but only slightly more likely.  Guess I'll just have to hope he stops by long enough to see if I see a flash of color or not.

    Re: Hummingbird Help

I GOT MY FIRST MALE RUBY TODAY!  The level of the 'juice' in my feeder had been going down so I suspected he's been here for a few days but I just saw him today.

I boil my sugar/water but I think I'll try mixing it the way you do next time so I don't have to wait for it to cool

    Re: Hummingbird Help

The male Ruby-throated has a lighter breast and stomach than the Black-chinned. The difference can be seen in your photo and the one posted by birdseye. The description I have gives the Black-chinned a distinct "white collar", which is definitely present in this photo. I have had a male Black-chinned at my feeder all winter up until a couple of weeks ago, and this one is the spitting image of it.

one sure way, Holder3... does he "wag his tail" while he hovers?  the black chin will, the ruby wont...he will snap his tail up and down quickly...please watch for him, and let us know....i have video of a blackchinned here in Nebraska, where the book says he shouldnt be...so the range guides are a guide only...

I'll watch for that.  He buzzed away last night but by the time I saw him he was sitting on a branch and didn't come back to the feeder.

Tail was wagggging.  The Black Chin wins.
