    Please help idenitfy this bird

One of my friends took this picture of a unknown bird on Mission Mountian in the interior of British Columbia, about 300KM north east of Vancouver. No one I know has seen this type of bird around in this area before. She mentioned that it had large feet like an eagle, so i assume its not a water bird. Looks like its about the size of an blue grouse.

Do you have a larger version of this picture? Also more pictures of the bird would help.

The picture is from a cell phone its 640x480 but when i post it here it looks small. The other pictures are not very clear. I can email you the original if you want. I am just learning this site so and i'm not sure if I did something wrong when uploading the picture. I will try again maybe, create a photo folder.

I uploaded the photo to my photos, hmm now I do not know what the path is to make a url link for this post. I talked with the lady that sent me the picture and she mentioned it was largert than a blue grouse. A blue grouse average size is around 25cm so i would think this bird was around 30cm.

Wow, that is a small picture.  At first glance I thought it was a pigeon but then it kinda looks like a turkey-type bird so...I don't know.  A larger picture would really help.

Nothing better than a good bird mystery!!

At first glance it looks like a mourning dove, but the description of big feet sure throws that off.  Sorry I don't know metric.

I believe it's a pigeon or rock dove as already mentioned and 30cm is approx. 12" but it is difficult to determine size. If it has feathers on it's feet it could be a "fancy" bred pigeon.

I'd say Rock Pigeon. The Mourning Dove has a smaller, more slender head. And some Rock Pigeons that are accustomed to people will get close enough to literally eat out of your hand.

The Blue Grouse has been split into two species, the Dusky Grouse and the Sooty Grouse. This bird looks good for the male Sooty Grouse. You can even see the yellow eyebrows. The feet of grouse are fairly large, and can be intimidating up close, explaining the ''eagle feet''.

No, not pigeon.  Grouse!  Stick out tongue

Most Definitely a Sooty Grouse, or Dusky, I didn't see where the pic was taken.  You can see the yellow skin above the eyes.

That is a freaky picture!  It appears like it is 20 ft tall, and on the road ahead!  Surprise

I think you've got it Ephily.  the picture of the Blue Grouse in my Book of North American Birds looks just like this guy except he's not displaying the red air sacs on the sides of his neck.  The location is right too

Re: Please help idenitfy this bird

When the bird was first discribed to me the first thing I thought of was the blue grouse, than when I seen the picture i was not so sure. The beak appears to be quite long for a grouse and has a hook on the end. Also the feathers lay down smooth in this picture, I have never seen a grouse in this area have feathers like that, all the grouse have feathers that do not cling to the body like that. I will try and get the other pictures and post them even if they are blurry.
