    Hungry, hungry blue jays!

Hey, it's nola.  I've been wanting to attract blue jays to my feeder, but I don't know what type of peanuts they like!  Any comments?

Just put out the ordinary in the shell peanuts - they go crazy for those.

I won't see a Blue Jay in sight.  But within 2 minutes of putting out whole shelled peanuts, Blue Jays come & swipe them, 1 by 1, until they are all gone.  (The Tufted Titmouse likes them a lot, too!  :)

Be sure you get the unsalted peanuts in the shell.

There are about half a dozen bluejays that come to my feeders - they eat the sunflower seeds and the general mix.  They are not Picky, but watch them when the peanuts are there; they will eat until they can eat no more, and then they dig a hole in the yard and bury the peanuts there!

My Blue Jays apparently love old hotdog buns.  I threw some out today and the blue jays appeared out of nowhere.  One tried to fly off with half a hotdog bun in its beak but he could only hop because the bun was too heavy for him.  These were just old not moldy buns.  He was so cute hopping through the forest with a half of a hotdog bun in his beak!!

My blue jays love black sunflower seeds as well!

    Re: Hungry, hungry blue jays!

I had 3 blue jays stop on my roof ( acts as one of my bird feeders) and they ate some seed briefly but I think what attracted them was the peanut shells. Unfortunately for them, the peanuts had been eaten by a squirrel and grackles earlier.

I always give the birds and animals unsalted peanuts too and what I consider healthy snacks not containing all the additives that our chemical burdens that our bodies must bear.

Don't the peanuts have to be roasted?  My aunt told me they should be.

Yes, roasted - the same ones they sell at the ballpark.

I wonder if they watch the game.

I have a pair of Jays in my yard with a nest high in a tree that mom hasn't left for days.  Mine eat a lot of black sunflower, but I think I'll try the peanuts and see if they like them.  What sort of feeder do you use for them?

Any platform feeder will work, but best to use a baffle on the pole because squirrels like peanuts too. You can even strew the peanuts on the ground for the jays, but it's the same problem with squirrels.

I see squirrels all the time at my friend's feeder.  I better tell her about that "Stop_Squirrels" movie.

    Re: Hungry, hungry blue jays!

What type of feeder do you have them in?  Because of the Blue Jay's size, I just spread the peanuts out on my deck railing, or put them in a small dish on the railing.  The ones I have in a feeder that is enclosed, only woodpeckers & smaller birds peck through until they get bits of peanuts.  The titmice & blue jays come right up to my deck railing, & snatch one at a time.  (They always come back for seconds!)  It is fun to do if you have about 30 minutes to set it up & watch them come!
