Hey... whatever it is, Pine, Yellow (Palm?) Warbler or Tanager..... I've got none of those on my checklist yet. So it will be a new bird either way.
Too many different opinions to positively check one or the other off.
The link to the Summer Tanager did, to an extent, describe the 'jump foraging'.....but I think the female is too dull.
Until I see it again, I can't check anything off. I will say that some descriptions I've rea of the Scarlet Tanager do not fit. For example, Allaboutbirds.com says it is a bird of the forest interior...... I saw mine in the woods, but in an opening. And the woods are set in the middle of a very residential area....a K-6 schoola dn middle school are directly across the street. Thats not to say that birds don't stray from the norm from time to time.
Also, that page says they are often overlooked despite the makes bright coloring, due to their secretive behavior and preference for the forest canopy. (and the photo of the female looks too dull....my bird was decently bright). The bird I saw was on the ground then in a 5' tall bush...and the flailing up and down is not what I would consider to be secretive. But like I said, I can't determine one way or the other.
In the Scarlet's defense, the page also said that in the heart of its range in the northeast (my backyard), Scarlets can be found in 'small forest patches'...and else where, the same sort of forest patch will be absent of any Tanagers. And I was in a small (er...about 4 acres) woodsy area. Who knows..... obviously not me! =)
I appreciate the feedback.... Lets take a vote. Post only what you think it is then I will tally it up and hope I see ti again to verify.
