Help ID birds, white with black blotchy marks on back of head and tail

Can't get the photo to load, but the birds were seen in a pen, eating from a container so assume they are kept for laying eggs.  The birds are all white except for black patches on back of the head and just above where the tail feathers begin.  There are some very small black spots near the eye also.  These birds have a rounded shape (similar to quail), and short beaks.  They are probably less than 12" in length.  Don't know if they are young or adults. They could be a young chicken, but am unsure.  The birds were seen in Wytheville, VA last week.  Any clues????  Thanks.  -Joannefitz

I agree sounds like bobwhites.  Some people raise them and let them loose for later hunting.

Quail eggs are also popular in Japanese cuisine. They could be raised for their eggs and for the dinner table.
