    White-Crowned Sparrow

These are cool looking birds.  My post isn't so much identifying....I was wondering if anyone knows how common they are in Connecticut?  One of my field guide has nothing for CT, while another just says migrants.

White-crowned Sparrows are migrants in Connecticut, although I inexplicably had one in my yard in Westbrook last July, which is very unusual.

Arent these beautiful birds? We have tons of them this year in our yard - they seem to come out in late afternoon. I think their faces are just fascinating.
    Happy Birding!

    Re: White-Crowned Sparrow

I saw this one around 2pm.  This was about a week ago, and I've yet to see him again.  I'm fairly certain he was just stopping by for a quick bite to eat before continuing his journey north.

He came with a group of White-Throats..... 3 tan and 4 white morphs.  I saw the group of sparrows on the ground under my feeders and noticed one with striking white and black on the head.  At first I thought it was one of the (I'm guessing adult breeding males) super bright white/black and yellow White-Throats....until I grabbed my binocs and noticed the awesome gray color that goes all the way around the neck.  The contrasting white and black head is amazing.  I'd love to be able to hold one some day to get a reeeealy close look at the head..... I've been wondering if any feathers protrude into the other color.....basically, if the termination line between white and black is as defined as it looks from further away.

I hope to see another this year. although I feel my chances are slim.  No worry, though....a pair of Indigo Buntings just moved in!!
