    Huge Bird Skull

    Attachment: IMG_0115.jpg
I found this bird skull last week - April 2008 - on the shore in Eastham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.   ONLY the skull was found, no other body parts.  Is it a bird?? Is it a mammal?  What kind of a beak is this? Where did this creature come from originally before it washed up on Cape Cod?  I hope someone can help identify this bird.  thanks!!

    Re: Huge Bird Skull

There is no bird with a skull that big. It would have to be a dolphin or a shark.

    Re: Huge Bird Skull

This is most definitely a cetacean skull (whale and dolphin family).  Can not say what species for sure, but probably a juvenile. Can not be a shark because their skeletons are cartilaginous and will not preserve without a fluid medium.  Cool find though!!

    Re: Huge Bird Skull

Thank you SO MUCH for identifying this skull, and even including the web link that confirms this is, indeed, a dolphin skull. I appreciate this answer, as this has been driving me nuts with curiousity.  It is interesting to me that when found, the skull still had the brain inside, but all the flesh was gone. I suppose fish ate the flesh. It is almost 100% clean on the outside.
