I just don't think the photo is adequate to make a definitive ID; we are just guessing.

Re: how we knew it was a Thrush...

Birders look for size, shape, color, posture, bill type and any obvious field marks. Another useful clue is found in the habitat in which the bird is seen and sometimes in its location within that habitat ( high vs low; on the ground or in a tree etc ). In the case of this bird, the shape, the overall brownish-grayish color but especially the spotting on the birds chest all immediately pointed to a Thrush.

Thanks for the query and to all for a stimulating thread.

It looks like a Song Thrush  but then I don't think they are here in the US  England, Europe, Australia and New Zealand as far as I know

The picture you just added to the original post is night and day better than the first one, and once again shows what a fool's errand it is to try to make a definitive ID from a single sub-optimum picture.  This one really does look like a Swainson's Thrush (anybody's guess whether it's the same bird).  You have a buffy eye-ring, buffy on the upper breast, and rufous-tinged lower flanks, all traits of Swainson's.  Moreover you clearly do NOT have gray cheeks, which rules out Gray-cheeked, and there's no reddish tail, which rules out Hermit.  This one is Swainson's.
