    Orioles & Hummers

Just a quick question. Will Orioles and Hummingbirds eat from the same feeders? The reason I ask is the Hummers were here and now they seemed to have left. We uaually have lots of them. I'm wondering if you can't have the two (Hummers & Orioles) eating to close together. Thanks from Walnut Hill,FL

Don't know about hummers and orioles drinking out the same feeder but I have noticed my hummers have been absent for about a week now but I figured it was either due to nesting or because we have a lot of honeysuckle blooming right now.

I've never had an Oriole at my Hummingbird feeders. They nest every year in our black walnut tree, but I never saw them at any kind of feeder. I even put orange halves out, but they can only be viewed at the highest branches.

    Re: Orioles & Hummers

Oriole feeders have larger port holes than hummingbird feeders BUT this is a true story..........

Last summer, I witnessed an oriole trying so desperately to drink the hummer's nectar that he/she

literally tore off the little yellow plastic flower port-hole cover on the feeder.  I then noticed that the

oriole's beak fit perectly in the hummer's feeder BUT the nectar ratio is slightly different for the two

    birds.

    Hummer nectar is 1:4 sugar/water

    Oriole nectar is 1:6 sugar/water

So I went out and bought an oriole feeder but that didn't keep them away from the hummingbird feeders.

And  I haven't witnessed a hummer drinking from the oriole feeder, ever.

    Re: Orioles & Hummers

A couple days ago my wife noticed 2 hooded orioles trying to drink from the hummingbird feeder. Tomorrow we will get an oriole feeder along with suet cakes. The suet cakes only last about a day and a half here because the pinyon jays come in by the hundreds and wipe the feeders out. We also had a Scott's Oriole come in today and sit in the cactus plant.

I've put out orange halves & grape jelly but they never seem to pay much attention. I went on the internet to see what an Oriole feeder looked like and my husband made one from a piece of high tensile fence wire. (the jelly & orange feeder, not nectar) He made a circle the size of a 1/4 pint jelly jar and I just put sugar water in the jelly jar. I have to refill it every day and a half.

    Re: Orioles & Hummers

Yesterday the Hummingbird was back and he did drink from the feeder. I was so glad. What puzzles me is I've never seen Orioles here in Florida until about two years ago. Is this something strange or am I just that unobservant?

I have a question. How do you get rid of Orioles? They won't let our Hummers feed & are chasing them having killed one already. They are beautiful birds but we enjoy the little hummingbirds. Since the Orioles have shown up the Hummers have left. Any information would be helpful.

    Re: Orioles & Hummers

This is an oriole feeder. The hummingbirds have been going to it and the orioles have been trying to use the hummingbird feeder. You might try putting out orange halves and see if the orioles will leave the hummers alone. We don't have a problem with the 2 fighting each other.

Does anyone know why I might have so many Orioles this year?  I live in South Central Minnesota in the River Valley and last week I noticed about a dozen Orioles in the yard..........today, I counted close to 60 in just two trees in my backyard.  Last year we had maybe four Orioles all year and they didn't stick around long at all.  I went through 4 oranges since yesterday and I filled two different jelly holders four or five times today.  They don't seem to touch the Oriole nectar but they drink all the hummingbird nectar.

We have so many Orioles that they are taking over the yard and chasing away all the other birds.  I had to rearrange all my feeders to allow for the other birds to come and go.  I love, love, love the Orioles but I'm just curious why we might have so many this year.  (We bought this property only 2 years ago, so I really don't have much to compare it to except for last year.)
