    Hybred?

Las Vegas, Nevada. This bird is larger than the dozens of morning doves I feed in my backyard and considerably meaner. It looks similar to the morning doves but has a collard neck. Don't think it's a pigeon. Any ideas?

Does it look like this? This is an Eurasian collared dove and its about 2 times the size of the morning doves. We have a couple of these hanging around our back area , one is this light collared and the other is a dark gray.

    Re: Hybred?

I believe you sir are the proud owner of an Eurasian Collarded Dove.  I didn't see your picture from what you describe even I would go to Vegas and bet on it.  It is a pigeon-sized bird.  If that is what you have, then it might be the first reported case in the West.

The Eurasians have been spreading from Florida for years from what I have been able to find out.  I was rubbing my head over this about
eight years ago when I saw my first one.  Since then, they are everywhere.  I was wondering just how far these birds have expanded their range.  They disappear for only about a month during the coldest weather here in the Baytown area of Texas.  Otherwise, they are here year around.

If it happens to be mourning dove size then it probably is the ringed-turtle dove.

Let me know what you think.
